 Ministry in Kazakhstan
Almaty Summer Outreach

Daily studies, reporting on contacts made on the street and prayer were an important part of the Evangelism Seminar held at the Discipling Center during the last part of June.

Reaching out to people with the gospel can be a daunting task for any believer, but especially for individuals who have not previously had the experience of doing so in public.  Speaking with strangers on the street is something we often avoid doing. That's why it was so great to see the young believers at the Almaty Discipling Center who attended an Evangelism Seminar in June taking the gospel with them to the streets in their neighborhood and challenging others to think about the reality of eternal issues and choices.

"Through this teaching I have learned how to better speak with people about Jesus,"
commented one teen participant after completing the week's seminar.  She and her group had the opportunity to visit the home of one of her friends and talk with her parents about the Lord Jesus and what He has done for them.

Each morning the group of 17 participants received dynamic and interesting instruction by the Kazakh-Russian tag-team teachers who have years of experience presenting this seminar.  A normal presentation usually takes place over the course of several weeks, but they graciously adapted the program and their schedules to enable a "crash-course" approach and the result was a succesful time of interaction, learning and application.

Another student said, "What I learned from this seminar is that I don't need to stop sharing my faith, because if I stop I will just lose all my knowledge and forget what I just learned."

Muslim Kazakhs and Russian-speakers Receive Word on the Streets

On the first evening of the seminar one group that went out on the streets had the opportunity to speak with a lady who was selling roses and variety bouquets at her flower stand.  Sitting next to her was an innebriated friend.  The first lady said she was a Muslim and had a very clear mind and after speaking with our Kazakh team member for nearly an hour, she prayed to accept the Lord Jesus as Savior.  Another Kazakh and a fellow Christian now plan on making follow-up visits to her flower stand.  Interestingly, her innebriated friend gave each of the three team members a bouquet of summer flowers for free.  She even hugged and kissed us.  That's the first time anyone has ever responded to us like that before!

As the week drew to a conclusion, on the last evening of street evangelism, another team chose to visit a nearby park.  There they found a lady sitting in an isolated section of the park accompanied by her drunken husband.  She had a very open, humble heart and had no problem recognizing her own history of sinful living, which she freely recited, exclaiming regretfully specific sins she had committed.  With a background of exposure to the Russian orthodox system, she said she still felt empty and the compassionate hearts of the team members guided her to consider God's love in Christ Jesus as detailed in the Bible.  This woman then decided to receive Jesus as Lord of her life, asking the team members not to say goodbye to her and make sure we called her and came to their apartment the next week to visit.  She prayed to receive Christ into her heart just as the nearby mosque's call to prayer went out over the loud speakers at about 6:30 p.m.

During the course of the seminar week, the Lord powerfully showed the young Discipling Center believers firsthand that He is still in the business of healing the brokenhearted and meeting people where they are at and saving them.
